THE CONCEPT BEHIND CONSTELLATIONS
In short, Constellations is about a love story and string theory. And that might not help. The story tracks one couple through the progression of a relationship as they meet, break up, fall back in love, get married, and deal with death. . .maybe. This is where the string theory comes into motion. One of the basic principles surrounding string theory is that there are many universes happening at once. Free will couldn't exist if we didn't have a multiverse where there are an infinite number options available. If there was only one universe, then you would only have real one choice and no free will but rather the illusion of free will. Nick Payne, the author, uses this idea by playing each encounter out differently. We don't know which reality is the real one because they are all real possibilities.
We have 8 actors playing the two characters to help capture our vision of Constellations. The stage is set up to where the middle is the present. The left and right are the multiverse where you witness the various possibilities of the characters' choices in the past. Eventually, the left and right will catch up to the present. You will see that represented in the set as well as the dialogue. And at the end, you still won't know what the exact conclusion is except what you hope will happen.
